Nintendo Wii

The Wii is Nintendo's latest generation video console, and in our humble opinion, could transform how people keep fit at home.

The big deal with the Wii is the controller, and more particularly how you use it.

Rather than just relying on strong thumbs to guide you through the levels, the Wii controller uses tilt switches that require you to move yourself in order to move your character. To play a tennis game, you use the controller like a tennis racquet and hit it the same way; for athletics, hold it a relay baton and pump your arms like a sprinter.

Relevance to CSPs

Early anecdotal evidence from Japan shows people are getting a decent workout after playing Wii for just 10 minutes. Hearing that Nintendo are committed to improving people health and seeing some of the new games on the horizon, we hope this isn't just a coincidence and there will soon be games coming out aimed primarily at increasing physical fitness.

Of course there's no hint of 'playground to podium' here and participation levels may be difficult to track, but Wii may just offer a way to increase the overall fitness rates of the people who perhaps need it the most.
