Writing content for your website is a daunting task, especially if you feel you're not a specialist in the area you're writing about.

If you're been asked to upgrade the Sports section of your CSP website but don't know where to start don't despair - the following tips should allow you to create a section within a few hours.

Top tips

  • Never write from scratch unless you have to - there's more than enough out there that can adapted with a little effort.
  • Think logically and laterally - if you're after information about Equity sports, think about how end-users will describe their sport.
  • Be realistic and don't get overwhelmed - you don't have to include every piece of information you find.
  • Use Wikipedia - if you don't know about this site, http://en.wikipedia.org has a mountain of well written information about almost every subject under the sun.  Use the search in the middle of the left column to find it.

Example: Boccia

I first typed in Boccia to Google and found http://www.cpsport.org/boccia/index.shtml - a great start with some good background information.

I then went to Wikipedia and found a summary of the sport which I summarised and re-wrote, then took at look at Derbyshire Sport site to see if there was any news or local clubs mentioned.  There were several mentions but I decided to just put the contact details of the Equity officer as she seems to be coordinating things.

Finally I searched for a good image on photo-sharing sites including www.dreamstime.com, www.sxc.hu and www.flickr.com but the best one is copyrighted so I'll have to stick with a text only page for now...

Creating and publishing the page took around a minute using Site Manager, and I then renamed it a couple of times to increase its visibility to search engines.

This took about 20 minutes from starting my research to publishing the page, and the results can be seen on my example Boccia page.
